How to avoid the dreaded New Year’s Eve hangover

Scott KirkScott Kirk—December 28, 20220

New Year’s Eve is a time for celebration, but it’s important to remember that overindulging on alcohol can lead to a nasty hangover the next day. If you want to avoid the headache, nausea, and general malaise that comes with a hangover, here are some tips to follow:

  1. Plan ahead

One of the best ways to avoid a hangover is to plan ahead and make sure you have a way to get home safely if you plan on drinking. This could involve designating a sober driver or arranging for a ride-sharing service or taxi. It’s also a good idea to have a backup plan in case your original plan falls through.

  1. Drink in moderation

One of the main causes of a hangover is drinking too much alcohol. To avoid a hangover, it’s important to drink in moderation. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that women consume no more than one drink per day and men consume no more than two drinks per day. A drink is defined as 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of liquor.

  1. Eat before and while you drink

Eating before and while you drink can help slow the absorption of alcohol into your bloodstream and reduce your risk of a hangover. Avoid foods that are high in fat, as they can slow down alcohol metabolism and increase the severity of a hangover. Instead, opt for lighter fare like fruits, vegetables, and complex carbs like whole grains.

  1. Stay hydrated

As mentioned earlier, alcohol is a diuretic that can cause dehydration, which can contribute to a hangover. To help prevent dehydration, it’s important to drink plenty of water while you’re drinking alcohol. You can also try alternating between alcoholic beverages and water to help keep your body hydrated.

  1. Avoid mixing types of alcohol

Mixing different types of alcohol can increase the severity of a hangover. For example, mixing a spirit like vodka with a sugary mixer like orange juice can lead to a higher blood alcohol concentration than if you were to drink vodka on its own. This can increase your risk of a hangover.

  1. Know your limits

Everyone’s tolerance for alcohol is different, so it’s important to know your own limits. Pay attention to how you feel as you drink and stop before you reach your limit. You may also want to consider spacing out your drinks over a longer period of time to give your body a chance to metabolize the alcohol.

  1. Consider alternative options

If you’re not a fan of alcohol or you want to avoid a hangover, there are plenty of alternative options available. You can choose to abstain from alcohol altogether and opt for non-alcoholic drinks like sparkling water or mocktails. Or, if you still want to enjoy a drink or two, you can choose lower-alcohol options like light beer or wine.

In summary, there are several steps you can take to avoid a hangover on New Year’s Eve. These include planning ahead, drinking in moderation, eating before and while you drink, staying hydrated, avoiding mixing types of alcohol, knowing your limits, and considering alternative options. By following these tips, you can enjoy your New Year’s Eve celebration without the misery of a hangover the next day.
