Boxing Day History: Stonings and Gift Givings

Boxing Day, also known as St. Stephen’s Day, is a holiday traditionally celebrated on the day after Christmas Day in the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and other countries that were once part of the British Empire. It is a public holiday in many countries and is often marked with various traditions, including gift-giving, sports events, and charitable giving.

The origins of Boxing Day are somewhat unclear, but it is believed to have originated in the United Kingdom in the Middle Ages. One theory is that the holiday was created to honor St. Stephen, the first Christian martyr. According to the Bible, Stephen was stoned to death for his beliefs, and he has been revered as a saint by the Christian church since the 4th century.

Another theory is that Boxing Day was originally a day for lords and ladies to give gifts to their servants and employees. In medieval England, it was common for the wealthy to give gifts to their servants and workers at Christmas time. These gifts, which were often referred to as “Christmas boxes,” were typically filled with food, clothing, and other small items.

Over time, the tradition of gift-giving on Boxing Day became more widespread and began to include not just servants and employees, but also the poor and disadvantaged. In the 19th century, it was common for the wealthy to visit the homes of the poor and give them gifts, such as food and clothing, on Boxing Day. This tradition of charitable giving on Boxing Day continues to this day, with many organizations and individuals taking the opportunity to give back to their communities.

In addition to gift-giving, Boxing Day is also marked by a number of other traditions. For example, in the United Kingdom, it is common for people to attend church services on Boxing Day. Many churches hold special services on this day to honor St. Stephen.

Another popular tradition on Boxing Day is the “Boxing Day Hunt,” in which people go out on horseback or on foot to hunt for foxes. This tradition dates back to the Middle Ages, when it was common for the wealthy to hunt on the day after Christmas.

Sports events are also a common feature of Boxing Day. In the United Kingdom, it is traditional for professional soccer and rugby matches to be held on Boxing Day. In other countries, such as Canada, it is common for hockey games to be played on Boxing Day.

Overall, Boxing Day is a holiday that is marked by a variety of traditions, including gift-giving, church services, hunting, and sports events. While the origins of the holiday are somewhat unclear, it is clear that it has evolved over time to become a day of celebration and giving back to the community.
